Seeing movies in Los Angeles is both a blessing and a curse, depending on the theater one chooses to attend. There are small, restored vintage theaters scattered throughout L.A. that my husband and I prefer, when they’re screening something we want to see. Reason being that the audience is much more respectful of the fact that a movie is playing and shut the hell up and get off the phone, probably because a larger portion of the audience actually worked on the film being screened, as opposed to the typical AMC audience. That said, it’s a rare thing in a Los Angeles theater for an entire audience (we are all quite jaded in this business) to gasp at the end of a film, collectively and audibly.
Yet Prisoners did exactly this. This one is an Oscar contender for sure – excellent writing, excellent acting and very surprising. All of these main actors are playing outside of type: Viola Davis, Maria Bello, Terrence Howard, Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman. I can’t say much without giving away crucial elements of the plot. The trailer is cut remarkably well, so watch that and then go see this one.
